Meet Michael Schreiber
Michael Schreiber (McNicholas). My wife, Amanda and I were both born and raised in Milton and graduated from Marlboro in 2008. During my time there, we were very active in the Tennis teams, band, and drama. Our time in the school and relationships with our teachers shaped the two of us to become who we are today. We now have a three-year-old son who just missed the UPK cutoff this year but will be receiving speech services before starting UPK in 27/28.
After graduating from Marlboro, I attended Mount St. Mary’s College, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2012 and an MBA in Accounting in 2013. I later obtained my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in 2017 and most recently completed my Certificate of Advanced Study for School District Business Leader at SUNY New Paltz.
I began my career in public accounting with Stanley Marks & Co. in Newburgh, which later merged into PKF O’Connor Davies. With a heavy focus in Audit, particularly nonprofit, governmental agencies, Teacher benefit trusts and self insurance health plans, and retirement plans. After several years in public accounting, I transitioned to the nonprofit sector, where I served as Chief Financial Officer for Hudson River Housing Inc in Poughkeepsie, an organization focused on emergency and affordable housing for youth, families, seniors, and veterans.
Currently, I serve as Vice President for Administration and Finance at SUNY Ulster Community College, where I oversee areas including finance, public safety, information technology, human resources, capital planning, facilities and plant operations. I also remain actively involved with Hudson River Housing Inc, serving on the Board of Directors, where I recently became President of the Board of Directors after serving as Treasurer for the past two years.
My educational studies and professional experience bring a valuable resource to the district and community especially pertaining to finances and operations, inclusive of IT, human resources, grants and public safety. In addition to this experience, my wife is a special education and literacy teacher in a High School, which gives our family a direct perspective on how decisions made at the administrative and governance level, impacts teachers and the students they serve every day.
My vision and goals for being on the board is similar to my own professional goals at the College.
First support staff: I believe the success of any school district depends on shared governance and strong collaboration. Faculty and staff serve students; boards and administrators do not serve students, we serve those who serve. This support looks like many things, resource allocation, reasonable and collaborative APPR, and accountability of when policies and procedures are not being adhered to. The unmanifestated disruption of one should not diminish the learning environment for all.
Second student preparedness: I believe the large gap of educational preparedness to students is in the area of financial literacy. In my opinion there can never be enough learning on this subject. Learning and understanding the eighth wonder of the world of compounding interest and how that can work for or against an individual. Including other key financial subjects and budgeting is essential for all students.
Lastly, financial transparency: As school districts across the state continue to face financial pressures, inflation, and new state mandates—including the electric bus mandate—it will be important to have strong financial oversight and thoughtful decision-making. Transparency of those challenges and the current status of existing financial positions is critical to gaining support and a collaborative environment from internal and external stakeholders
At the end of the day, I believe the success of any school district depends on shared governance and strong collaboration. The role of the Board of Education and the Administration is to support the teachers, paraprofessional, food service staff, bus drivers, operations staff, and all of the people who work every day to serve our students. They are the boots on the ground, and we must ensure they have the support and resources they need to succeed. I believe this can be done in a fiscally responsible way that the entire community can stand behind.
